Recidivism is not only about what a person decides. It is also worth looking at the housing, people, pressure, and routines waiting when that person returns to the community.

This NIH-hosted study examined 2,453 people on probation in San Francisco. The researchers found that lacking a regular living situation, experiencing homelessness, and residential instability were associated with increased recidivism risk. The study shows an important relationship, but it does not say that housing alone determines what someone will do.
